LITERACY VOLUNTEER OF FULTON COUNTY IS ...

STUDENTS

...adults, 18 and older, who want to develop their reading, writing, or English speaking skills. They receive FREE, PRIVATE one-on-one tutoring in adult basic education (Basic Literacy) and English as a second language (ESOL). Our students decide what skills they want to improve.
  • For Work: reading manuals, manifests, tests, forms, applications, business letters, memos, work related writing, grammar, spelling, job applications,

  • For Life: reading newspapers, magazines, literature, journal writing, letter writing, grammar, spelling, drivers tests, study skills, medications, GED preparation

  • For Family: reading to children, homework help, reading/writing letters to teachers.

  • For New Immigrants: English conversation, reading, writing, grammar, spelling, TOFEL preparation

VOLUNTEERS

...people with a love of literacy and learning, and a commitment to helping others.
  • Trained Tutors - complete an 18 hour preparation course, meet 1+ hours a week with each student, set and achieve student directed goals, participate in continuing education, provide in-service instruction in areas of expertise

  • Tutor Trainers - experienced tutors who assist/lead at tutor training, provide in-service instruction in areas of literacy expertise

  • Office Volunteers - maintain the tutor lending library, provide tutor, student and clerical support.

  • Board of Directors - Board and committee meetings- long range planning and advocacy for adult education
